Last night was our last show with DIOYY? and Hounds, @Heaven (great venue) it was brill. We will certainly miss them all, and all of the road crew x

Also I have a new (technically very old) vintage drum kit*. That might not be especially exciting, but when you learn that this kit belonged to Ben's grandad who played it in the world's biggest jazz band, that's just awesome. I have a record breaking drum kit!

No more illness, we can play gigs again now. First one up is on Saturday in Brighton with Sad day for Puppets, who are good. When i was in Sweden last year i picked up a copy of their album on recommendation and wasn't disappointed, so it's a pleasure to play with them whilst they're over in the UK.

We've been practicing how to play our songs and have been doing promo stuff for our album. We'll be announcing release date/tracklisting/artwork and title sooon.

It is NOT called 'Ham dust', 'The Bungalow', or 'Guess what! Nothing.' (anymore)

It's taken a while, we started back in August, but are finally there, and really happy with it. It will be released early April on Club AC30.

London Headline Show Cancellation

Unfortuantly we have had to cancel our London show this month through illness. I had to go to hospital to have my appendix removed and although i am now out, am out of action for a little while. We are sad to cancel the gig, but will be posting up lot's of new dates very soon.

This week we are in the Fly in the magazine (new band section) and on the site performing acoustic versions of sunshine overdose and cinnamon as part of their courtyard sessions

Tripping Over Words: The World according to Tripwires

Currently in the studio finishing off their debut album, Reading’s shoegazers-in-chief, Tripwires, took a little bit of time out to talk to us:

What’s happening in the world of Tripwires?

‘We’re recording today, but hopefully we’ll be done by the end of the week, and the album will be coming out in March or April next year so we’ll be releasing some singles. Then I guess we’ll be touring, hopefully in lots of new places. Although, for us it's important that we keep writing songs; if we want a second album we’ve got to keep writing.’

What is it that motivates you to write?

Boredom; it’s not a great feeling, but it’s good for writing songs. But our influences play a part too.

What’s influencing you at the moment then?

666 by Aphrodite's Child, Spirit Of Eden by Talk Talk and watching documentaries about North Korea and Krautrock.

So how did you all get together and start playing?

We met at secondary school. You wouldn’t guess now, but we used to stay behind afterschool playing metal together.

What's the most difficult part of being in a young band?

Embarrassing questions about 'the band' from friends and family, and embarrassing questions about 'the band' from people who like Pendulum or Mumford and Sons; sometimes it’s best not to tell anybody. We won't get 'rich' and you're not going to 'see us on Top of the Pops'.

Can you remember the best gig you've ever played?

We once had Peroni in our rider, which was a bit special. The band we were supporting had Beck's though, so it's quite conceivable that the boxes got mixed up.

What's your favourite bit of kit?

We’re big fans of Roland Space Echos, as well as Death by Audio's Harmonic Transformer, that’s the dirtiest pedal we've ever played.

Do you think there's a shoegaze revival happening now? Any ideas as to why?

Perhaps, a lot of our favourite music has come as a reaction to the shit before it. Generally speaking, the quality of music put out in the last few years has been shocking. When people like Calvin Harris and Dizzee Rascal claim guitar music is dead, you know that change for the better is on its way. What better justification to play loud guitar music when shit pseudo-electro bands seem to dominate? Maybe a new generation of musicians will discover great music that was around when they were kids that they didn't know existed at the time, because all they heard on the radio was the fucking Spice Girls and Take That.

What is it that you love most about making music?

That when you record it, you commit something permanently, and that whilst playing live you can do something great, yet never hear it again. You can’t help but love both those things.

Reading December show

We are playing a headline gig at the Oakford on Saturday 11th December. This gig is approximately 2 weeks before xmas (actually, exactly 2 weeks). This will be our last show of the year, and we will probably end up drinking too much. The Oakford lies directly opposite Reading station, and it will be cosy and warm

On 7th December we are playing our label's christmas party with two great bands. Headlining the night will be Adam Franklin (of Swervedriver fame) and his band Bolts of melody. Both Raise and Mezcal Head are both great records, so it's a pleasure to share a stage with him. The other band playing are Ringo Deathstarr from Austin US. We've really liked what we've heard so far and both have albums coming out next year on Club AC30 so perhaps the first of many gigs together.

So an update. The album is close to be finished, but is not finished. Recent weeks has seen more overdubs, mixing and mixing. We do however have a name and a tracklisting.

Looking forward to the moment when everything is finished, it's been a while in the making. Hopefully you'll be able to hear some of it, sooner than alot of people think.

Hello

I watched this last night. It was brilliant.

Thanks to anyone who came to watch us at ICA on friday, it is a wonderful venue, and one that we hope to play again. We thought both Exit Calm and Serena Maneesh were superb, the latter especially blew our faces off.

We are going to be finishing our album in the next few weeks, we are looking forward to this. In the meantime we will be putting up some demos of a few of tracks which we've worked on over the last couple of weeks. We'll be putting them up soon.

Today we went back to rehearsing. It was weird. We could obviously remember our songs, lyrics/chords etc but initially found it really hard to play them. It was nice however nice to play without having to play well. Pretty much everything we've played in the past month has been recorded, comitted to tape (or computer as it were). Thus the novelty of playing stuff wrong is not only appealing but fuuuuuuuuun...

The album is sounding good, but still not finished. We are having a small break from it, playing some gigs and are then going to finish it later this month. We would give you some insight into the tracklisting and title but (A) That wouldn't be cool and (B) Theres plenty of time for that. We will however be playing quite a few songs off of it in the two gigs we play this month, come watch:

When i was 14 I had a bootleg recording of Radiohead's infamous 1997 Glastonbury appearance which was my favourite CD to listen to until it got too fucked up and stopped working. The recent boring and predictable claims from the Jo Whiley brigade that this years Glastonbury (like every other festival they cover) was 'the best ever', made me dig out that CD just to check that it still wasn't working, it wasn't, so i found it on youtube...

This weekend we played Dot to Dot festival in Bristol and Nottingham and had a good time. We haven't got a record, an EP or single out at the moment, so playing to a full room of people is always a nice surprise. We should have perhaps made more of an effort to watch lots of other bands, but after playing we were feeling pretty tired wand the lure of sitting in the van for hours proved too great..We did however see some bands; Liars were awesome, watching frontman Angus Andrews on stage is like witnessing someone having a mental breakdown. Beach House were the other highlight, they were not only stunning, but spectacularly proved you can create some sort of atmosphere, even in a huge pseudo leisure centre/school gym type room..

So, an update on the shoes..The ones i ordered still haven't come, but the situation is suprisingly better, im currently using plasters to cover the holes (yes there's another), and just so you know, it's working out for me..

We are currently finishing our final exams of university (albeit one more for Joe next week), soon there we will have no more excuses. Last weekend we played Stag & Dagger festival in Glasgow. The drive was long but we had a fun time. A pattern may be emerging: both times we have played in Glasgow have been sunny days, good venues with nice food and beer, and every single person we have met has been nice...including the skag addict we met on the first occasion. It always feels a long way from home up there, which at the moment is a good thing.

Hello.

First of all, this week has been a rubbish week. I currently have a hole in the bottom of my shoe, which within 10 minutes of walking necessarily means a hole in my sock..Therefore have been walking around pretty much bare footed on the right hand side...This has been far from ideal on 'rough' terrain as every step feels like a punch to the face..

This week has had very few highlights, i will however share them with you...

Monday - Someone sitting next to me fell off of their chair. The best part wasn't their desperate and unsuccessful attempt to avoid the floor, rather the somewhat calm manoeuvre of picking themselves up from a pile on the floor, sitting back on the chair as if nothing had happened and nobody had noticed..

Tuesday - Finding out that my housemate has FOUR Blue Peter badges. He also went onto the show and got a hug from Konnie Huq...Fuck knows where i was going wrong all those years..

Wednesday - Someone left a carrier bag in the library near me. After a few hours, when i was leaving i had a little look, saw a glimpse of a bag of marshmallows inside so naturally took the bag and left. On further inspection i also found two packets of biscuits and a Subway cookie..

Today - When walking along the pavement a branch from a tree fell (don't ask me how or why) and landed two yards in front of me. That thing landing on my head would have surely been the last straw..

On the positive, i have ordered some new shoes (and they should be on their way) AND we are playing a gig on Saturday (Albeit 400 miles away in Scotland). We will be appearing at Stag & Dagger Festival in Glasgow, at the Captain's Rest venue @ 4.45PM

Despite it's proud claims of the contrary,Sky News were not impartial throughout the recent election . The Murdoch press were an absolute joke throughout the campaign. The Sun, The Times, Sunday Times, News of the World and SkyNews blantently supported the Tories (some more blantent than others)with the ridiculous level of funding that the Conservatives received being very rarely even mentioned within these press outlets. Adequate in-depth analysis of Tory policy simply didn't exist either...Much of the British public went along with what their papers told them and ultimately Murdoch got what he wanted (albeit not completely, what with the coalition etc)...Murdoch will now enjoy his tax breaks, greater freedom to 'innovate and expand' his empire and will certainly become an even more richer man.

It is now time ladies and gentlemen to dig out your copy of 'Holy Bible' (Manic Street Preachers), sit back and enjoy the decay..

Tonight we play the Oakford social club in Reading. It's been a while since we've played in our hometown and are *despite absolutely fucking hating the pa we have to use tonight*, happy.

Tomorrow we have the pleasure of watching The National at the Royal Albert Hall. Sorry to go on about them so much, BUT they are miles better than your favourite band. Their new album 'High Violet' is released on 11th May, and can currently be streamed HERE

On friday we are playing our own London show for Club.The.Mammoth at the Stag's Head in Dalston. Apparently theres a new trainline that's opened up going to Dalston. We are playing with William and Islington Boys' Club...you should come..even if only to try out the new trainline.

The weather is currently very nice........However this goes hand in hand with having to be stuck in doors for 10 hours a day writing my dissertation, which isn't even any good by the way...

The Fall......

So the fall released their (29th?) album 'Your future Our Clutter' this week. I haven't managed to have a listen yet, but i have a good idea what it will sound like...

The Fall are awesome...i remember accidentally listening to them when i was about 12 and all i wanted to do was tear my eyeballs out. What i didn't know at the time was that in many ways that was the point... Perhaps with a little help along the way (thanks to Mr J Peel) the band have evolved into somewhat of an institution in British music. So much so that any band who even THINKS of doing something similar just gets bombarded with "just sounds like the fall"....That ladies and gentlemen is amazing

Anyone who knows anything about the Fall will understand what i mean when i say Mark E. Smith IS the Fall... What i cant work out is whether i wish there were more Mark E. Smiths in this world or whether for the sake of everyone, one is enough

In homage to the man himself....

yesterday we recorded a new song at Miloco's "Pool"
It was the first time we had ever been to a Miloco studio and we'll be making every effort to go back to one again as we really felt at home in the Pool ;)

We recorded a song called 'Positive Thinking' with a lovely producer Premen. We'll put it up on myspace in the next couple of weeks.
oh and we also had chinese takeaway, sainsburys rocky road and homemade fairy cakes from sam's nan.

Elliott Smith

The odds were stacked against me liking Elliott Smith...As far as I was aware, he was an 'american acoustic singer/songwriter' who wrote that song in that film.

But I hold my hands up, I was wrong to assume. When I first started properly listening to him I was blown away.....Melody + Boredom + Melancholy...Drake/Buckley/Cobain

For those of you who don't know, he released some great albums: Elliott Smith/Either/or/XO/Figure 8 until his death in 2003

'From a Basement on a Hill' was released in 2004. This was made up of a load of songs he was working on around the time of his death. He didn't have a say in the track selection or song orders etc but nonetheless it is still a great album..............

We are in good spirits. On Saturday we are recording a new song at this place......

MGMT release 'Congratulations' on 12th April. In the meantime, the album can be streamed from HERE

Its produced by Pete Kember (Sonic Boom/Spacemen 3) and we are all in agreement that it is awesome. Nine songs long and very different from their first record, much less obvious single wise...they'll probably end up getting dropped or something

We wrote a song last night which apparently sounds Velvet Underground-esque..nice...its a shame we dont come from New York, instead we have to walk around with the tag that we are from Reading, not the one in Pennsylvania, the one which sits alongside the M4.

We are all eagerly anticipating the new album from The National released 11th May.

Last week they played the first track on the album live on the Jimmy Fallon show...
And it is amazing:

10/03/10 - Hoxton Bar and Grill

After driving over 1000 miles so far this week, tonight was the last gig supporting The Kissaway Trail :(

09/03/10 - today we played the O2 academy 3. when we arrived we found ourselves face to face with probably about 400000000000000000+ kids in black hoodies. turns out they'd been queuing since 3pm to see YouMeAtSix.

We are driving to Glasgow tomorrow... a seven hour drive, so have deliberately been holding back stories to tell each other for the journey

Today we've been in Bristol re-stringing guitars and buying food. For anyone thinking about buying a Fender Jaguar...buy a mustang, the jaguar is a nightmare: i have to use nail varnish to glue the bridge in place..rubbish

Hello.

We have decided to use this site to write down our thoughts, a new home so to speak. Myspace is a tundra, and not a very nice place to be, this place feels alot warmer..comforting..like speaking to a brick wall

After 4 months of not playing any gigs we are playing 5 next week. We will be supporting the Kissaway Trail on their UK dates, and after 4 months of abstinence, these dates feel like a world arena tour. Suddenly we have to worry about guitar strings, having somewhere to stay and oil

9th March - Academy 3, Birmingham
10th March - Hoxton Bar & Grill, London

13th March - Start the Bus, Bristol (Headline)

We will try our best to keep this updated, even if it is just posting up youtube videos of psychopaths or Danny Dyer
